As far as shifting an 8 vs a 10, I used to shift them the same, I never used 1st in either, and never used 6th in a 10 except maybe as a turning gear. We have a 1980's vintage C70 with 2 speed rear at work, the rear end shift wire corroded and shifted into high, and then I guess shorted out because it's stuck in high.
